Many FEI members are actively involved with their communities and generously volunteer their time and skills. Meet one of these members: John Griffiths, VP Marketing and Communications for our FEI Twin Cities chapter.
John has volunteered for 18 years with AccountAbility Minnesota, whose mission is to provide high-quality tax preparation and related financial services to individuals and families of limited means.
He started as a tax preparer, back when AccountAbility Minnesota was still using pencil and paper. Now everything is computerized. Currently, John is a reviewer. While a key post, he says he definitely misses interacting with clients.
Today the group has 10 sites around the Twin Cities, where 30 to 35 tax returns are completed every night. John’s site has 10 preparers and 4 reviewers. Nearly 600 volunteers collectively provide more than 20,000 hours of tax prep and financial education to low-and-moderate-income individuals and families.
John first heard about this volunteer opportunity at an Institute of Management Accountants meeting. He comes back every year because it’s a lot of fun, and he likes that he can use his specialized skill to give back to the community. “AccountAbility Minnesota has been a great organization to be involved with,” John says. “I have enjoyed being part of a team at each tax site where I have volunteered, and I feel good using my financial skills to give back to the community.”
There are many volunteer opportunities at AccountAbility Minnesota. Last year, volunteers provided 13,231 low-income taxpayers with free tax assistance, helping them to get $24.3 million in cash refunds. Visit their website to find out more.
